Surely an irrelevance as Germanys obligations were discharged by the UK
shortly afterwards ? As stated in this forum when I asked if Germany had
any liability for unexploded bombs we occasionally find.

If you know your history, you'll know that the insistence on Germany
paying reparations after the first world war was a key cause of the rise
of the Nazis and the second.

And yet the Allies did take reparations after WW2. Permanent military
bases in Germany was one, lots of engineering was another - one of the
best selling motorbikes of the 50's and 60's was based around a German
design taken after the war, Poland, the USA and Russia also used the
design to make their own motorbikes.
Rocket design was another prominent technology the Allies had from Germany.

Winners privilege.

The allies also kept *West* Germany safe from Soviet occupation which
wasn't cheap ...

In fact the fact Germany wasn't really allowed to spend much money on
defence 1945-1989 is one of the reasons they were able to become the
industrial powerhouse they are. Unlike the UK which not only had to
defend them, but an entire rotting empire. Luckily the US gave the UK
loads of dosh after the war. Not that Joe Bloggs would ever know.

It was intended that Germany should pay reparations as part of the
Marshall Plan.

Which Britain spent on keeping the Empire ... unlike Germany who rather
unsportingly spent it on Germany and Germans, thus gaining their headstart
in the post war industrial landscape.

"should" pay reparations doesn't mean that reparations were paid.

Can I suggest reading the article in the link - it explains what
actaully happened.

I thought a proportion of the Marshall Plan money was spent on nuclear
weapon development and new bomber aircraft.

They also encouraged large numbers of immigrant workers -
"Gastarbeiter" - to come and help rebuild their economy. Meanwhile,
back in Blighty...
